Top 10 Most Popular Cars by Sales

June 28th, 2010 phort6n2 Posted in Cars No Comments »

Dan Bodrero asked:

How does one define a car in terms of popularity? Almost everyone has different standards on the matter. Some like their cars to remain with their stock color and accessories such as steering wheels, dash board covers, and floor mats and still be popular. On the other hand, cars that have been modified and have been fitted with custom seat covers, mufflers, and bright headlights also rake in a lot of popularity points.

For this year, here are the 10 most popular cars in terms of web visits and not the actual number of registered owners:

1.    Chevrolet Corvette – a high-performance sports car, boasting of a 430-horsepower V8 and impressive fuel efficient mechanism. The Chevrolet Corvette consumes 16 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon while on the highway. The interior details of the 2008 Chevy Corvette need no customization of its car seat covers, dashboard, and the likes. A total break from its predecessors’ interiors, the insides of this car is just magnificent.

2.    Ford Mustang - the Mustang remains to be one of the most popular cars from the long line of Ford models, offering a diversity of performance options: 2 body-styles, 4 trims, 2 engines, 2 transmissions and a wide list of additional features. Though the stock accessories are already pristine as they are, using customized interior details such as floor mats won’t hurt.

3.    Dodge Challenger – returning from 35-year absence from the road, the classic muscle car that is the 2008 Dodge Challenger is boosted by a 6.1-liter V8 engine pumping 425 horses. The Dodge Challenger also prides itself with Bluetooth connectivity, satellite navigation, and Keyless starting capability.

4.    BMW M3 – running for the first time on a 414 HP/ V8 engine, this car comes in sedan, coupe, and convertible types. The car also comes in different stock colors. Speaking of colors, one can mix and match with its posh interiors, starting with the dashboard and car seat covers. The transmission is also a thing of beauty, one can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission, or a new 7-speed M Double-Clutch transmission with Drivelogic.

5.    Porsche 911 – with a horse power numbering to 480 and a sleek exterior design and metallic finish, who would not want to be behind this car’s steering wheel? A true stunner, the Porsche 911 can burst to 60 mph in a matter of 3.7 seconds. Speaking of metallic finish, one can tweak the seats and sport a set of metallic custom seat covers.

6.    Mitsubishi Eclipse – the sporty coupe from Mitsubishi, the Eclipse has evolved from its predecessors in terms of style and shape. This car blitzes on a 3.8-liter V6 that creates 265 horsepower to drive the front wheels.

7.    Lamborghini Gallardo – a two-seater on a V10 engine, this model is Lamborghini’s best-selling model. What makes this car so desirable? It possesses an impressive 560 horsepower.

8.    Nissan 350Z – launched in 2003 but was not remodeled since then, the Z car from Nissan is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 306-horsepower. The Nissan 350Z comes in coupe or convertible.

9.    Mazda MX-5 Miata – a further advancement from its 1989 forefather, the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata boasts of quick steering, easy handling, and a sporty physique. Now available in the convertible type, no doubt this model will sell like pancakes.

How To Feature Your Car In Magazines

June 24th, 2010 phort6n2 Posted in Cars No Comments »

Bobby Leong asked:

Featuring your car in Car Magazines can have many benefits for any Car Owners. First, it will give a good documentation of your modified automobile for your effort and secondly, it will give a good promotion for your car if you want to sell it.

However, since there are millions of automobiles out there on the road, how can one attract the attention of Car Magazine to feature your custom car?

Here are some tips and guides on How to Feature your car in magazines by a Modified BMW car owner whose BMW M3 Coupe was featured in 3 Car Magazines.

1. BE the FIRST (NEWS SELLS)

Car magazines works like newspapers, they need news to sell their magazines, hence to make the magazines notice you, you need to create news for them. If your car has the first new modifications from a car tuner (a new prototype), that would be ideal as it will create curiosity and attention of readers.

2. BE DIFFERENT: create a whole unique car:

Your best bet is to begin with a clear mind to create something different and unique to your own liking, of course according to your taste. You don’t want to create a unique car only to dislike it after the modifications. People want to see something extra ordinary. “Specials” always attract attention. But remember to do it tastefully if not, it will only attract negative feedback. Be creative, don’t limit yourself to parts from one car tuner, you may mix with products of other car tuners or even from other makes of car tuning companies.

3. CUSTOMISED MODIFICATIONS: ATTENTION TO DETAIL:

Custom modifications attracts attention, it shows creativity and uniqueness too, that nobody else’s has. Car Magazines are enthuasistic to show customized parts to the world and people will want to buy their magazines to read and to check out the new parts.

4. BRIGHT COLOURS:

Car magazines love BRIGHT colored car, so if your modified car is of that, you have a point ahead of other car owners. You may have noticed this in all other cover magazines too. So if you plan to repaint your car, catch attention and make it to the cover, choose bright! (special note: choose a bright color that you can live with!)

5. CONTACT YOUR CAR MAGAZINES:

Well you need to let the magazines know that you have a unique car to feature. Find the best magazine that suit your car theme or make and contact them. If your car is modified by a car tuner, you may ask your tuner to call the Car Magazines as they will have direct contacts to the publishers.

If you have a special unique car, many car magazines are more than willing to feature it. Think of it this way, Car magazines need cars to feature in their magazines every month! (At least five cars in eash issue). How are they going to find these special cars? If you have one and feel like getting it featured, take some good photos now and email them. You will have to let Car Magazines publishers and editors know of the existence of your Unique Car. Here are some pictures of modified BMW that you can get some ideas for your car tuning.

The E90 BMW M3 Can it Live Up to the M3 Badge?

June 21st, 2010 phort6n2 Posted in Cars No Comments »

Jo Alexander asked:

The BMW M3 has always been an iconic road car, that offers high performance and handling, all wrapped up in the subtle body shell of the BMW 3 series. With the launch of the very latest M3, known as the E90, BMW is hoping to further strengthen the reputation of this well known brand.

The original BMW M3, called the E30, was launched way back in 1986 and really set the standard by which all other sports saloons would be judged. This first model had a 2.3 litre 4 cylinder engine, however to keep pace with its other German rivals, in the shape of Audi and Mercedes Benz, engine capacity has steadily increased leading to the all new 4 litre V8 that is found in the E90.

For many years the BMW M3 could easily lay claim to the title of best sports saloon, however with the launch of the new Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63 AMG this claim is not so easily assured. Especially as Lexus has now joined the fray and surprised everyone with its all new, and very capable IS-F.

Initial the E90 M3 was first released as a two door coupe, which strictly speaking was called the E92, and came with the new V8 engine, a carbon fibre roof and the option of a six speed double clutch gear box that could beat the manual in the race to 60 by 0.2 seconds.

The coupe M3 was then soon followed by a four door saloon which, whilst lacking a carbon fibre roof, was shorter, wider and taller that the 2 door, and both models share the same front end design including spoiler, indicators and front car lights. This was later accompanied by a hardtop convertible, which was a move away from the fabric roofs seen on previous generation M3’s.

In the performance stakes the new M3 certainly has the power to keep up with its rivals with the V8 engine cracking the magic 100bhp per litre figure and producing 414bhp in total, with an incredible rev range that red lines at 8,300rpm. No matter which body style you go for all versions are electronically limited to 155mph, however in the sprint 60 the coupe leads the way at 4.5 seconds, followed by the saloon at 4.7 seconds and the considerably heavier convertible at 5.3 seconds.

There is no doubt that this very latest M3 moves the sports saloon game on further, and it still has the pace, handling and driver feedback to see off the competition from Audi, Mercedes and Lexus, although their deficit on the E90 is certainly not as much as it used to be. However more tellingly, despite the increased power, grip and driver aids some of the pure driver enjoyment of the original M3 may have been lost, especially when Evo magazine ranked the original E30 M3 above all its contemparies, including the new E90.

6 Steps to Buying a Car at Auction

May 25th, 2010 phort6n2 Posted in Cars No Comments »

Robert Dombrowski asked:

Since the late 90’s, I have bought every car I’ve owned at auction. I’ve owned 2 BMWs (a 325is was my first one back in ‘98, then an M3 a few years later which I can’t find a picture of), a Porsche Boxster, and a Mercedes CLK 320 Cabriolet. I have been mostly happy with my experiences, with the exception of the Boxster (which I will explain below). I have generally saved about 20% off of what I would have paid in a private party transaction. Don’t be fooled by all of the sites that tell you that you will pay pennies on the dollar, it’s simply not the case. However, if you can save 20% ($8,000 on a $40,000 car!) it’s definitely worth the time and the effort.

I have always gone to live auctions as opposed to buying online via e-bay or other sites. I like to see what I’m getting, plus then I don’t need to wire tens of thousands of dollars to somebody I’ve never met. I’m sure that online auctions are fine for many people, but I prefer the live auction route.

Here are the things you need to remember:

Figure out exactly what you want. Don’t ever go to an auction to just “look for a car.” I always narrow my car choices to 1 or 2 models, then allow some flexibility with the model year. This leads me to the issue of my Boxster… I originally wanted a Boxster S, but instead I bought a plain old Boxster, which was really underpowered and somewhat of a disappointment. Make sure you know what you want, and what concessions you are willing to make before you go to the auction. Be patient. It’s going to take you a while to find the car that you want (i.e. weeks or months) so be prepared for that. You will need to do ongoing research (more below) during your spare time until you find your car.

Have your money lined up. At auction, you will need to provide a cash equivalent (i.e. cashiers check). The problem is, you can’t get a car loan at an auction like you can with a dealership and you can’t run down to your local credit union during a transaction. What I’ve done in the past is taken a home equity line, which has been a great strategy because (a) you get lower interest rates, (b) your interest is tax deductible and ( c) you can get much lower payments.

Prepare. Do lots of research, and be prepared to pay a couple of hundred bucks for good information. You are going to need to research two things: auction locations and car availability, and once you find cars you will need to research individual VIN numbers. I’ve found that the best research sites usually charge a fee, but spending a couple of hundred dollars up front is an incidental cost if you’re going to spend $20,000-$30,000.

Research auctions. There are hundreds, if not thousands of sites on the internet that promise auction cars for pennies on the dollar. As I mentioned before, don’t get suckered into that thinking, you probably aren’t going to save more than 20% unless you get really lucky. Start with free, government sites. You can find these by doing a specialized google search (under “advanced options” on the search page, look toward the bottom and there will be an option so search U.S. government sites).

Finding non-government surplus auctions and others that are open to the general public (without an auto dealers license) is a little trickier. I use pay sites because I haven’t found any comprehensive free sources. There are two pay sites that I use, but only one that I would recommend because the other one only has information for a few of the larger police auctions. Mind you, the one below has all of the exaggerated marketing claims (i.e. 95% off retail) but it actually provides some great information if you can get past the fluff:

Federal, State and Municipal Auctions

Research cars. Once you register for an auction you can get the VIN numbers of the available cars and start researching them. Years ago you had to pay for individual carfax reports, but now they have blanket programs that allow you to look at multiple VINs for one flat fee. In my opinion, this one is the best:

AutoCheck® Vehicle History Reports from Experían Automotive.

Remember that this part is critical. Almost all auctions are “buyer beware”, and there are lots of cars floating around with title issues. Do not buy a car with any kind of title problem. Ever. There are thousands of cars that were flood damaged in Hurricane Katrina that are popping up on the used and auction markets, so look out.

If you do enough preparation, you will very likely find the car you want within a couple of months. Good luck!

Throttle Pressure and Throttle Response

February 23rd, 2010 phort6n2 Posted in Cars No Comments »

Haitham Alhumsi asked:

From a technical point of view, throttle response can be measured by how fast your engine can build vacuum in its intake manifold, via throttle pressure. The faster and higher peak vacuum is reached in the intake manifold, the higher the pressure differential will be between outside air, and your engine. This pressure differential forces the air to flow from the area of high pressure (outside air) to the area of low pressure (the engine and cylinders), and the higher the pressure difference, the greater the pressure force, and the faster the air flow into the engine.

This is essentially how throttle response works. To improve throttle response several engine alterations can be used to achieve a higher peak vacuum in the engine or a faster change in vacuum per throttle input… some of these include:

1- Using undersized intake pipes and intake plenum runners to increase the airflow velocity in the intake system, making the engine able to suck all the air out of it faster and create vacuum sooner.

2- Adjusting intake cam timing to open the intake valve as peak vacuum is created inside the cylinder near bottom dead center.

3- Reducing the overall intake system volume, by using smaller manifolds, less vacuum lines, and more electrically operated (rather than vacuum operated) engine auxiliaries which means the engine has less air volume to clear from the intake system to create a vacuum in the manifold to force new air in.

4- Using cam separation and cam overlap (when both intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time) to have the previous cycle’s exhaust gasses help pull in fresh intake gasses for the beginning of this combustion cycle.

One interesting application of this concept is the G-Power supercharger kit for the BMW M3. The ASA supercharger powered kit focuses on response and efficiency rather than on astonishing peak power figures. The G-Power kit utilizes a very conservative boost supercharger by ASA giving a peak of only 4.4 psi of boost. Since the engine already very highly powered at 420hp, the addition of just 4.4psi of boost results in well over 500hp (as a conservative estimate) and as much as 560hp as a result of this combination.

The focus of the G-Power kit is not just power figures, as rather than just providing a supercharger kit for the M3, G-Power has designed a completely new intake manifold for the M3. The manifold although has higher volume than the original M3 manifold (for more peak power as this is now a supercharged car), does have a narrow profile that promotes high air velocities to improve throttle response. Furthermore, the new manifold has integrated individual runners for each cylinders complete with trumpet style inlets raised from the floor of the plenum, which has been proven through fluid flow simulation to reduce boundary pressure differentials, reduce the pressure drop inside the intake manifold, and promote higher air velocities that lend themselves to higher peak vacuums and faster vacuum buildup inside the manifold.

Even though centrifugal superchargers typically show a linear boost curve with engine rpm, and thus produce little to now power gain in lower rpms, the combination of this supercharger with the redesigned intake manifold and new tune reportedly provides over 20% increase in torque at ALL engine rpms, and with increased response.

Here it is in G-Power’s own words:

Air duct: Sport air filter system, CAD-FEM flow optimized boost recooling system consisting of an air duct made from aluminum cast, high capacity air-to-air intercooler made from aluminum cast in the car’s front and a large volume air box made from aluminum cast, including 8 integral resonance induction pipes made from light polyamide, ensuring an optimal throttle response and a perfect torque curve; pneumatic controlled, engine load related boost control; boost level approx. 4 psi rel.

The G-Power kit comes in 3 power ranges corresponding to 4, 6 and 7psi of boost. The 7psi kit with their full titanium exhaust is capable of peaking out over 580 hp with great response to match. Last but not least, the new G-Powered M3 is capable of doing a 0-124 mph 2 seconds faster than a factory M3, which at those speeds is about 20 car lengths of distance between the two cars. Moreover the G-Power with its unlimited speedometer will keep pulling all the way up to 223mph!
