Global Car Manufacturers Savour India

Carazoo.com asked:

India has an age old history in automobile industry. Since the first car was launched in the country, it has witnessed many advancements and innovations that have continuously changed the overall appearance of the industry in the global car market.

In the present scenario, Indian automobile landscape is showcasing a number of cars and other vehicles with a combination of technology and consumer-friendly price tags. It displays a variety of cars in different price segments ranging from a small car of Rs 1 lakh to a high-end luxury car worth Rs 5 crore. These cars with such a huge difference in price tags cater to different sections of the society.

The first and perhaps the most noteworthy example of the growing Indian car industry is the soon-to-be-launched Tata Nano. This homegrown frugal car is simply a small wonder. After the unique engine technology and price tag of Tata Nano, global car manufacturers have their eye on Indian engineers and technology. The car expected to hit in the festive season is a big threat to the small car segment in the global market.

Other than Nano, there are many other small wonders soon to be seen on Indian roads. First in line is the car manufacturing leader, Maruti Suzuki, who is all set to roll out its small car, Maruti-Suzuki A-Star. Then there is a car codenamed as ULC (ultra-low cost), proposed to be designed and produced by a joint venture between Bajaj Auto and the Renault-Nissan. Following the trend, Honda, Seil India, Hyundai Motors, Czech Skoda India, General Motors and even Toyota is planning to design an exclusive small car in the Indian car market. The trend of producing small cars with upmarket and innovative technology has itself paved a path for global car manufacturers to reach India.

The unique combination of innovations and technologies in Indian small cars has also redefined the concept of luxury cars in the country. As new technologies are banking on small cars, the differentiation line between small and luxury cars seems to fade away except the size and price. This compelled luxury car manufacturers to re-define the structure, body lines and interiors of all their car models so that a broad differentiation line always stay in between. The redefined luxury car segment is another aspect of the growing Indian car market.

Luxury car manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Rolls Royce have introduced a number of luxury cars in the Indian car market. They are still in process of rolling out more cars with better engine technology and futuristic features. With the increasing number of people showing their interest in luxury cars, these manufacturers are earning good revenues, compelling them to strengthen their footprints in India.

For those looking for sheer luxury on wheels a slew of launches will hit the Indian market. BMW will drive in its new 7 Series and its sportier M3, M5 and M6 followed by the sports utility range the BMW X6. Rolls Royce will roll out more number of Rolls Royce Phantom whereas Porsche is ready to hit India with its exciting Porsche Cayenne GTS and the Porsche 911 new GT2. Few new cars from Volkswagen, Skoda, Mitsubishi, and Toyota are also on their way to India.

Experts believe that a wide assortment of options is available in India to suit different sections of people. The market is even more promising with low-cost production, highly skilled engineers and easy availability of car loans. All these factors along with the increasing number of cars on Indian roads, has become a strong reason for global car manufacturers to savour India.

The History Of The Iconic German Sports Saloon

January 2nd, 2010 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 2 Comments »

Thomas Pretty asked:

The 3 series was brought into production in the mid 70’s and it had the task of replacing the older 2002 model that was ageing very fast and needed a big improvement. BMW however had a big problem because the 2002 model was a car that brought out the spirit of BMW and the new 3 series would somehow have to follow that same spirit. In 1975 the first BMW 3 series rolled out of the factory in Milbertshofen. BMW then waited for the public’s opinion on the new car, and to their surprise the public took very well to it. The car also had to compete with other performance cars such as the Mercedes Benz W124.

Many of the cars before the 3 series were relatively small and BMW were afraid that members of the public would find the car too big and expensive. Many people were attracted to the 3 series sleek looks and good craftsmanship and from then on the opinion has never changed. After the first year of sales, around 221,298 3 series had been sold around Europe and then the following year when the car hit the North American shores BMW reported sales of up to 290,000. The BMW 3 series has had many evolutions over its 30 year life time. They include:

From 1977 to 1983 the E21 entered the world and sold over 320,000 examples around Europe and North America. From 1984- 1991 the E30 was the next generation of the 3 series and the big difference was the price tag it also had to compete with the Audi 80. The E30 was priced at $18,210 and that was more than double that of the E21. The public found nothing new other than a sleeker body and an updated engine that pushed out 101hp. There were also convertible versions released in 1987. In 1988 the M3 was released sparking the start of the M3 generation with a 2.3 litre four cylinder engine that produced 192hp; it was primarily built to take on the Mercedes 190E Cosworth in the FIA Group A racing series.

From 1992- 1998 the E36 was introduced and many new variants were made including a sedan, compact coupes and convertibles. It was slightly larger than its predecessor and this led to more legroom and a much stiffer chassis giving 50/50 weight distribution. New engines were released including the 24 valve straight six that produced 189hp! At the time this was very good. A 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds meant that the new 3 series was as fast as the last generation E30 M3. The new M3 featured a new 3.0 litre straight six that was coupled to the faultless 3 series chassis. The new engine produced 282hp that propelled the car to a 0-60mph time of 5.6 seconds; the public loved the car due to it being so quick and so accessible in a 4 door sedan. An evolution M3 was also available pushing the 0-60 time down to 5.5 seconds!

The E46 was the newest generation that restyled the look of the 3 series. It featured a new look body and a new rounded front end that made it more appealing to customers. It also inherited large wheel arches bulking out the body making it look more intimidating. It also grew larger than the previous E36. Even though it was larger it was just as comfortable and smaller than most other saloons.

The new E46 used an aluminium chassis which made it 70% percent stiffer than the E36 and it still maintained the 50/50 weight distribution. Due to the larger body the new car was roomier and to make it safer, new airbags were added. New engines were also introduced with 2.5, 2.8, and 3.0 litre variants installed in the model range producing around 184hp, 193hp whilst the new 3.0 litre produced about 225hp.

The next M3 was truly magnificent with a 3.2 litre engine producing an amazing 333hp. It ran the 0-60 time in just 5 seconds dead. The E90 model on sale now has redefined the looks of the 3 series again, making a much sleeker and styled version of the body giving it more curves. The engineers have said this new body is 25% stiffer than the previous generation.

The 3.0 litre engine has been modified to produce 255hp and placed in much of the range. The new M3 will have a new 400hp V8 engine from the previous M5 and it has a claimed 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds raising the bar once again. With competition like the Mercedes SLK and Audi R8 the M3 has its work cut out to be a leader in the packed German performance saloon market.

BMW M3 three different body types

December 31st, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 2 Comments »

Darrin Dean asked:

The BMW M3 is a hi-performance sports vehicle version of the BMW three series compact vehicle. The M3, which is a short name for Motorsport 3, is employed in many racing competitions such as Rallies, DTM and other series. M3s are also available in 3 different body types ; the sedan, the coupe, and the convertible body styles.

the 1st ever M3, the E30 M3, was produced in 1986. Heavily based totally on the E30 platform, a beefing up of similar specs with the engine architecture from the M1 was adopted to realize a superb performance fit for motorsports. A road version of the M3 was also released with less h.p. along with an increased compression and a catalyzed model that approximately produces only 215 horsepower.

A V8 high-rev engine is utilized by the M3 Coupe to provide top of the line sports vehicle performance. Improved aerodynamics is also a main feature not just for the coupe but to all M3 body types. A regular release of the road versions of the sports vehicle was followed to follow the homologation rules set. Different models from specifically released models to updated versions of sports to road versions are ceaselessly being released.

The newly released M3 now has the intuitive iDrive installed that can control anything on the M3. The driver seat is also optimized with memory function which can enable the driver to take easy complete control of the car. Down force is improved through the optimized aerodynamics of the M3. Controlled airflow under the cars body makes the M3 increase its down force together with its cooling capabilities.

Legendary Performance Cars - BMW M3

December 28th, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 2 Comments »

Kasan Groupe asked:

Of the many thousands of different cars that there have ever been, and will ever be, there is one combination of a letter and a number that every car person can readily identify with. M3. When those combine, it means that there is a car out there that is powerful, looks good, sounds better and drives like nothing else. The BMW M3 is one of the most legendary cars on the road and has a long history to back up that legend.

Introduced in the late 80s, the car made great strides as a racer for the street. Not only was it phenomenal on the track, winning many of the races it was involved in, it was also a sensation on the street. It offered an undiluted driving experience that not many cars even today can touch. The one that really made the M3 badge and name mainstream was the E36. It was introduced in 1993 and came in coupe, convertible and four door body styles. It had a high-revving V6 upfront and rear wheel drive out back. The car was known for its stability at speed and the way in which it could demolish corners with the flick of the wrist.

In four door guise, the car was as usable and sedate as any car on the street at normal speeds. It even included a big trunk so you could go on long trips. And then, when you got off the motorway and hit the back roads, the car turned into a different animal. The V6 would come on song and the steering would perfectly weight up and give you all the feel you could want. Even visibility and interior quality was better than most other much pricier cars.

Today, these cars still command a premium price and many of them have been raced in some form. A lot of these cars are now doing weekend track duty for their owners because they are fairly cheap for what they are and are still incredibly quick. If you do look for one to pick up, make sure that it has HID headlights and the later, more desirable 3.2 liter engine.

Racing through time with the BMW M3

December 25th, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 2 Comments »

turboglot asked:

From 1995 through 2006, BMW of North America’s BMW M3 racing program boasted 53 wins in 118 races entered, and 14 championship trophies. The first generation M3 swept through the racing circuits of Europe like wildfire. Winning the World Touring Car Championship in 1987, eight European Championships, and an additional 60 national titles, by 1992 the E30 M3 became the most successful touring car of all time.

While the car was officially sold here, North American enthusiasts read about the M3’s racing triumphs with fervor, but reading was one thing – they wanted to see it in competition for themselves. Beginning with the introduction of the second-generation E36 M3, they got exactly what they wanted – in spades.

Victorious from the start

BMW of North America began its first racing program only days after its incorporation in March 1975. With BAVARIAN MOTOR WORKS lettered across the top of the windshield, the overall win by a BMW Motorsport-prepared 3.0CSL at the 12 Hours of Sebring set the winning tone for the twists and turns of the next 30 years.

After the CSLs, the ’70s decade ended with the 320 Turbo program that introduced BMW’s move to a more refined, up-market model. Known affectionately as the “Flying Brick,” the fame-throwing coupes delighted sports car racing fans with their signature exhaust fire.

The program also added reams of data to BMW’s turbocharging technology – information that would help a BMW-powered Brabham win the 1983 Formula 1 World Championship. There were a few more flery years in the late ’80s in IMSA’s (International Motor Sports Association) top prototype category with the  BMW GTP.

The very expensive program netted only one win, but added incalculable experience to BMW of North America. Back to production cars, BMW of North America sponsored a pair of E34  M5s to an IMSA Supercar championship. When the second-generation M3 debuted in 1995, the company was ready for a major effort in production car racing.

The two M3s that rolled off the BMW Team PTG (Prototype Technology Group) race truck at the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona looked very much like they had come directly from the showroom. They were, however, surprisingly fast, as longtime BMW driver Dieter Quester took the GTS-2 class pole.

This was the beginning of a long and successful run for the second-generation M3. When the M3s appeared at Daytona the next year it was obvious that things were getting very serious. The M3s almost leapt from the PTG transporter. They were lower, wider and meaner.

A second consecutive pole resulted in a podium finish (third), and the team  knew they were finally on the right track. Later that season, in May, a 27-year-old Bill Auberlen joined the effort at Lime Rock Park. Auberlen would go on to win more races in an M3 than anyone in North  America, and to personify “The Ultimate Driving Machine.

If the  addition of Auberlen was the program’s “tipping point,” it was Sears Point Raceway in July that was the program’s turning point. The  team introduced its new, lighter “sprint” M3, and the new car led a  1-2-3 BMW sweep. Three more wins garnered BMW the 1996 IMSA GTS-2 Manufacturers’ title.

The next two years, 1997 and 1998, were arguably the most rewarding. After serving notice the previous season, the BMW Team PTG M3’s declared ownership of sports car racing’s GT class. Wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, plus six more victories, gave BMW its second Manufacturers’ Championship, the Drivers’ crown to Auberlen, and the Team title to PTG.

As it did on the street, the four-door M3 sedan was an equal part of the team, adding win after win. The success continued in 1998 with victories again at both Daytona and Sebring. Racing in two series simultaneously (USRRC and SPORTS CAR), the BMW Team PTG M3s won seven more times, sweeping the Manufacturers’, Drivers’ and Team Championships.

New competition arrived in 1999, limiting the E36 M3’s success to wins and the ALMS Team Championship. The 2000 12 Hours of Sebring saw the introduction of the all-new E46 M3, but the competition continued to be strong, and it was not until the tenth round, at Laguna Seca Raceway, that BMW Team PTG reached the top step of the podium. It was the new M3’s only victory in a development season.

BMW was back on top in 2001 as two BMW Team PTG M3s combined with two BMW Motorsport M3s to dominate the ALMS GT class and sweep the Manufacturers’, Drivers’ and Team titles with the awesome, V-8-powered M3 GTR. However, these proved a little too awesome, and racing rule changes made the car ineligible to return with the V-8 engine.

After a hiatus in 2002 and a diversion to the SCCA’s World Challenge Series in 2003, BMW Team PTG entered the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2004 and 2005. With new six-cylinder-powered E46 M3s, BMW Team PTG won 10 of 12 races to take the 2004 Manufacturers’, Drivers’ and Team Championships. The next year saw seven more wins with the team missing another Manufacturers’ title by only seven points.

Returning to the ALMS for its final season in 2006, the M3s worked hard against competition with larger engines. In an unfamiliar role as underdog, the BMW Team PTG M3s reached the podium three times, showing that even as a six-year-old design, the M3 could still compete with more modern, powerful machinery. Although winless in 2006, the BMW M3 retired as an overall winner.

When the checkered fag fell on the last race of the 2006 season, BMW of North America wrote the final page of the most successful chapter to-date of its 31-year motorsport story. From 1995 through 2006, BMW of North America’s M3 racing program drove to 53 wins in 118 races entered, adding 14 Championship trophies to corporate display cases – and a shine on the roundel like never before.

All About Bmw Leasing

December 14th, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 8 Comments »

Gargi Nath asked:

s time to finally sit down and consider getting another vehicle, there are a lot of things that you truly need to consider. If you are looking into getting a bmw but have never had much experience in driving or owning one, you may want to think about different bmw leasing options. The great thing about going with a bmw leasing option is that you are not stuck with the total purchase price of the car. Since the bmw is very expensive, this may be the only way you could afford to drive such a nice car. If you want to give the bmw a try without committing yourself, your money, and your credit to purchasing a bmw outright, then the bmw leasing option is probably the best way to go. Just make sure that you are looking for a bmw leasing special that fits your individual needs and budget. This is an excellent way to sort of test drive the car for a year or two to even decide if it is something that you would like to have for many more years to come. If you find through your bmw leasing option that you really enjoy the car, there are generally options for purchasing the car outright at the end of your lease terms. Problems With Leasing A Car While there are a lot of wonderful things to take into consideration when thinking about signing a bmw leasing agreement, there are things that you need to keep an eye on. Most all of the different bmw leasing agreements or deals that you come across are going to allow you a limited number of miles that you can put on the car in any given year. This means that if you drive a lot for work or pleasure then you may run into some problems. At the end of your bmw leasing agreement, if you ran up too many miles, you are going to have to pay out some cash out of your own pocket. Also, there is the problem with the inside of the car having any stains or damage to it. If you have small children or you like to eat, drink, or smoke in your car then you may run into problems with your bmw leasing agreement. When you turn the car in at the end of the one year or two year leasing agreement, the company will go over the inside and outside of the car with a fine tooth comb in order to see what damage, if any, you caused to the car. If there is even the slightest mark or stain they will explain that you have gone against your bmw leasing agreement and you will have to pay for the repairs. These are just some of the things that you need to consider before signing on the dotted line. http://bmw-cars-bikes.blogspot.com

Bmw to Offer Twin Turbo 1-series in the US by 2008

June 28th, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars No Comments »

Joe Thompson asked:

BMW officials have confirmed to Winding Road at a corporate event this week that the 1-series will be making its way to the US shores in 2008. Although there are some official company statements released saying that the 1-series is due for the US market in two years a source within BMW’s company however said that is an overstatement and confirmed that the 1-series will be announced for the US market before the end of 2007. Sales of the 1-series is expected to start early in 2008.

And that is not the best news yet—the 1-series that will debut at the US market will possess BMW’s fabulous new twin-turbo, 3.0 liter inline-6. This is the same engine found in the new BMW 335i coupe and convertible that features the piezo direct injection and delivers significantly more thrust than its official 300hp rating suggests. The 1-series has also lighter weight; its powerful hatch should be able to beat the 335i’s sprint to 62mph by 5.1 seconds. Its performance is comparable to that of the previous M3. Also coming to the US market is BMW’s newest naturally aspirated 3.0 liter inline-6.

The 1-series cars that would debut at the US market will be two-door versions only. This means that the US market will miss out on the five-door version. But BMW has made it clear that additional models will be added later on but they would like first to get a quick read on the viability of the car’s acceptance in the US before they deploy other models. The 135i and 130i will also be launch in two-door hatchback forms and soon probably a two-door convertible and sedan with a proper trunk will also be offered but of course this is something for BMW to decide on.

Prices for the 1-series hasn’t been finalized but expect the car to cost somewhere between the BMW 3-series and MINI.

Facts on the BMW 1-series

The BMW 1-series with codename E87 is a small luxury car/small family car manufactured by the German automaker BMW since 2004. The 1-series were created to compete with Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf. The 1-series is also the only vehicle in its class that features rear-wheel-drive and longitudinally-mounted engine.

BMW 1-series was first offered to the market in 2004 as a 5-door hatchback was offered as a replacement for BMW 3-series compact range. The 1-series is currently the smallest and most affordable vehicle depending on the engine model of course offered in the BMW range. Unlike the first generation of 1-series the all-new 1-series of BMW is built on its platform (E87) but its shares many components with the E90 3 Series.

BMW’s 1-series is built in Regensburg, Germany while some of its engines are from the Hams Hall plant in Birmingham England. In the year 2005 it became one of BMW’s most successful products with 149, 493 units sold.

How to Stop Fantasizing About the Bmw M3 Sedan

June 26th, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 1 Comment »

Chet Waters asked:

How To Stop Fantasizing About The BMW M3Sedan

Yes, I know exactly how you feel. When I first saw the TV commercial for the BMW M3, I was totally blown away. My heart was really racing as the announcer says, “Eight thousand four hundred revolutions per minute. The first ever production V8 BMW M3”. That was the most exciting 32 seconds of automotive promotion that I’ve seen in a long time. No wonder there has been 194,234 views of that commercial on YouTube as of April 2008.

As you know, BMW owners are fanatics. And I mean that in a good way.

BMW M GmbH, the motorsports arm of the company, has created the 414 Horsepower V8 high performance production M3. You may not be aware of this, but the M3 sports sedan concept was introduced to the American market in 1988. And since that time it has been nothing but a mutual love affair. Truly it has become one of the greatest fantasies for BMW enthusiasts. Myself included.

See if you don’t agree that this fourth generation BMW M3 has one of the car industry’s most remarkable engines. Not only is it a V8, but it also has more power, less weight and more efficiency than the previous M3 engine that was only 6 cylinders. In addition, your little heart will jump for joy when you hear that this new production V8 gives you 15% increase in power and at the same time you get an 8% improvement in fuel economy. All I can say is WOW.

All these numbers just make my head confused. I only use them to impress my wife as an excuse for me wanting one of these powerful babies. The fact is, I could really care less about the technical “specs” of my fantasy BMW M3. All I want to know is———

How is it going to make me feel when I put the “petal to the metal”?

All of you guys and gals out there who share my fantasy for the BMW M3 understand that it’s all about the feeling. And as the old saying goes about people who do not own a BMW, “If I have to explain it to you, you just won’t understand”. But that’s OK. This only means more excitement for you and me.

Tell me the truth. You feel the same way, don’t you?

In closing let me share with you a few “little known” facts about why all BMWs are so inspiring. Each model is designed with the ability to be recycled at the end of their useful life. In fact, BMW has a separate plant just to “recycle” as much material as possible from cars no longer in service. This helps not only the environment but also the consumer by keeping the new car prices as low as possible.

And one last tid bit for you. Expect to see in the future the coming of hydrogen-powered models. It’s not a matter of “if”, but a matter of when.

So, go feed your fantasy. I promise I won’t tell anyone.

Check out the first ever production BMW M3 and feel the thrill.

Bmw on the Middle East International Auto Show

June 24th, 2009 phort6n2 Posted in Cars 1 Comment »

Evander Klum asked:

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG took the opportunity of the ninth Middle East International Motor Show for serial unveilings for its two concept cars and the new M3 Coupe.

The new BMW M3 houses a powerful V8 engine producing 420 horsepower. The M3 can speed from 0-100 kph in just 4.8 seconds. In the Middle East, the M3 will go on sale this coming January. BMWs concept car, the low-slung CS is a four-door Gran Turismo for Middle East’s luxury segment going in production two years from now. Another unveiling was for the X6 concept series. With its twin turbo, BMW marks the X6 as the world’s first sports activity coupe.

According to Phil Horton, managing director of BMW Group Middle East, his region could make it to the top five globally with hit X6 sales. The M6 will make it to dealerships in mid-2008.

“This will be a key market. I think if the company could design a car specifically for the Middle East, it would be the X6. It looks good and both engines offered will have twin-turbo power,” he said.

For the year 2007, the BMW X5 was the best selling for BMW in the Middle East. The X5 covers 15 percent of total BMW sales in the region. The X5 is followed by the 5 (including the 530i and its BMW 530i parts) and the 7 series.

Sales trend varies from the United States and Europe, where the 3 series, smaller than the others accounts for the 50 percent of sales for BMW. Before 2007 ends, BMW aims to sell almost 15,000 BMWs and 700 Minis, these figures pose a 25 percent sales increase for BMW and 25 percent increase for Mini sales.

“We’re looking at good growth for the next year. Depending on the regional political situation we could easily see 10-15 per cent growth in the market and for BMW,” said Horton.

As the third quarter of the year was completed, BMW reported a net profit leap of 78 percent due to higher sales and BMW sees further sales rise before 2007 ends. With these sales result, BMW is maintaining its post as the world’s largest premium automaker.

“The biggest growth opportunities for BMW and most other car manufacturers are in China, India and Russia,” said Horton.

“With our [Middle East] growth levels, that clearly puts us in the top ten ranking. The markets of America and Europe are not growing at anything like those levels.”
